The Tibetan Spaniel breed has been one of the most popular breeds in Finland during the last 30 years. The biggest population of tibbies in the world is living in Finland. The popularity gives always positive and negative aspects for breeding.

1.1.1996 The Finnish Tibetan Spaniel Breed Club applied for the approval of the Finnish Kennel Club for the goal-oriented breeding programme which aims to help the breed club preventing hereditary diseases to spread within the breed. The program in Finland is called PEVISA.

The hereditary diseases in PEVISA programme of the Tibetan Spaniel breed are: Progressive Retinal Athrophy (PRA) and Patellar Luxations.

In practice this programme means, that both parents of the litter have to have a certificate of knee joints as well as a certificate of eye examination, before registration of the puppies, done by veterinary surgeon authorized by the Finnish Kennel Club. Nowadays the eye examination is not aloud to be older than 24 months before registration of the puppies. Both parents have to be ID-marked.

The Finnish Tibetan Spaniel Breed Club recommends all stud dogs and brood bitches to have also the certificate of hip/elbow dysplasia. In minimum breed club will highly recommend to have this certificate for the stud dogs who have 30 descendants or more.
The Finnish Kennel Club makes the evaluation of the X-ray pictures of hips according to the rules of F.C.I.
